Capricorn (魔杰座) (mo jie zuo)
Release Date: 15th October 2008
Overall Rating:
Jay Chou's ninth studio album, for the first time ever Jay Chou combines his interest in magic with his beloved music, the result is a fantastic album. With the theme of magic, cards figure significantly in the design of the album, from the first promotional poster to inspiration behind songs. Jay Chou wants to tell you the story of the battle between the Magician and the Joker. The title of the album in Chinese cleverly combines the three meanings - magic, Jay's name and the star sign Capricorn. All three are closely tied to Jay Chou himself. Magic is not the only theme of the album, the cover of the album, which took a month to complete, is based on a fantasy setting that is described in track 1.

Reviewed by Miss.Gem on 25th December 2008 Not one of Jay's best albums. really loved Shi Guang Ji, Uncle Joker and Dao Xiang. Superb ending! weakest songs are Lan Ting Xu and Give Me A Song's Time IMO. I would rank this 5th best out of his 9 albums so far! great job Jay
Reviewed by hero5007 on 21st December 2008 so..i guess if i write a review..i should make it a nice and detailed one
Cover/Design: Not bad...I mean it looks nice and all but i personally prefer
jay not to have long hair. The album cover has pratically
nothing to do with the album name. If I'm correct, this is
Capricorn not Fantasy. Still, the graphics of the album cover
make up for it. I personally prefer the promotional pics more
than this. And now...album name font, I don't know why but
it is quite important to me. I ABSOLUTELY love the album
name font in Fantasy, Ye Hui Mei, 7 mile fragrance (if it
wasn't for the font...I would totally hate the album cover),
Still Fantasy, and the album cover i love the most
November's Chopin (jay chou looks good, mysterious, AND
album font looks AWESOME!!)...For this album...it's sorta
plain...but I guess if you make it look all fancy then it'll ruin
the overall picture. See, the font is simple but magically
elegant, which balances the fancy pic of jay in the fantasyish
costume and background.
*Note*: he includes a calendar, jay chou rubix cube, and jay
chou poker cards.
Calender: Ok just another other calendar with jay
chou on it.
Rubix Cube: Ok, sorta hard to see with all the tiny
pics and the color of the cube is black
so anything on black is already hard to
see...But still its a jay chou rubix cube
that's captivating enough
Cards: cool...again..it's just jay chou merchandise..
okk...moving on...
Songs: Overall...some people thought it is was better than On the Run
some thought it was worst. I thought On the Run was generally
a better ALBUM than Capricorn..because most of the songs I was
alble to listen to and not forced to press the skip button. BUT!!!
Capricorn had some better SONGS. To see what i mean...just read
the next part.
1. 龍戰騎士 (Dragon Knight): Ahh...this song...this song..actually suits the
album cover...and i find it ok...not my style
but still i'm able to enjoy it. It's not enough
to be on my mp3 player but still ok. Some hip
hop, some rock, and some jay style rap. Singing
was ok. Lyrics were just weird...i didn't really
get what the song was about in general.
2. 給我一首歌的時間 (Give Me The Time For One Song):
Yepp..the usual R&B-ish sounding song..this
song caught my attention the second time i
listened to this album. It was catchy and so i
downloaded it and put it on my mp3. I listened
to it for about one or two weeks, then got tired
of it. After all, its just like his normal R&Bish
love songs. It was just like the Wo Bu Pei from
previous album, but slightly better. Simple lyrics
another same kind of melody, and nothing really
memorable or any of the BANG! his old songs
used to give.
3. 蛇舞 (Snake Dance): This was the third song in the album, and the third
song that caught my attention. The whole song
is based on indian style of music with all the hip
hop.. and yes...theres Lara from Nan Quan Ma Ma
singing.
This song i was surprised because jay used an
indian style to it. Singing was quite good too with
Lara. Again, it probably wouldn't count as one of
jay's memorable songs.
4. 花海 (Sea Of Flowers): Just another love song. I would just classify
this song as just one of his weaker pop love songs
His singing was weak and i just didn't like this
weak random love song. I just skipped this song
and never bothered listening to it, until now while
i'm doing this review.
魔術先生 (Mr Magic): WARNING!: If you hate the cowboy song last year
you're going to hate this song. So..if you hate the
cowboy song last year...i strongly encourage you not
to listen to this one, because it is EXTREMELY catchy
and IT WILL GET STUCK TO YOUR HEAD!...just as it
got stuck in mine. I generally prefer this song over
the cowboy one. I don't know why. Maybe because
i prefer magicians than cowboy or the song/singing
has gotten better...or..im starting to get used to
these type of songs. Singing was done in Jay's cutesy
voice, which has gotten better (or I've becoming used
to it).
6. 說好的幸福呢 (Where's The Promised Happiness):
The for-sure-it's-going-to-be-popular love song.
Actually, i find it the second best song in the whole
album. It's alot better than the second song and
surprisingly..it's still on my album. It's another sad
love song, but the melody is nice. It's a depressing
song and made me think of someone i love. Again,
simple lyrics....but unlike the second song, the
melody suites it. Not to mention, its more of a simple
but beautiful lyric type. Comparing this song to Jay's
past classic love songs, this one would probably be
one of the weak ones, but is very good in this album
Comparing to Cai Hong (Rainbow) or the Longest
Movie in the last album, i find this song to be slightly
better, but is this song was more like a mix of the
two, which turns out to be quite good. This is one of
the more stronger songs in the album.
7. 蘭亭序 (Lan Ting Preface): Another attempt by Jay to create another
Dong Feng Po (East Wind Breaks) or Fa Ru Xue
(Hair Like Snow). Not bad, it is a zhong guo
feng song after all, but i was disappointed that
the melody was almost exactly like the zhong
guo feng song in the previous album. Singing
was ok. Jay was trying to sing in a chinese
opera style, so the song has less mumbling.
Not bad, but just another weak zhong guo feng
song of Jay's.
8. 流浪詩人 (Wandering Poet): First time he used harmonica in his song
i think. A collaboration with someone named
Gary. I think he's in Jay's company JVR. Some
Hokkien in the song and the rest is in
Mandarin. Singing was in a lazy cutesy voice
which made me press the skip button. Just
another weak song.
9. 時光機 (Time Machine): Another cutesy song about going back in time
More guitar in it, and was quite good, but it got
boring. Judging from the title, i was curious at
what kind of magical thing it might be. and i
thought it might have been the unique song
and the song with the jay chou touch that we all
wish for. Disappointly, its just another pop
cutesy love song.
10. 喬克叔叔 (Uncle Joker): People may hate this song, but i absolutely
LOVE THIS SONG! this was the first song
that caught my attention and has been ever
since then, my fav. song out of the entire album
I liked the style and didn't even mind the cutesy
singing. I absolutely loved the lyrics. It described
the clown's pain and my pain at the same time.
The only part i didn't like was the sound effect
of a some maniac laughing. Lyrics were
humourus yet deep with meaning. It was like a
upbeat song while having a depressed or angry
tone to it. It also has some Latin style guitar
near the end and seems to add/make the song
more intense. I can't say if it is a weak or strong
song, it's more on your personal opinion.
11. 稻香 (Fragrance Of Rice): C'mon...is there anyone that hate's this song?!
it is again a cutesy song...but has some deep
meaning to it....i like this song and most of
the other people do too, but that still doesn't
mean it's a great song..it's an average song
but a strong one in his list of weak songs.
Overall, this is the weakess album so far. I just hope he can do better next
year. He should continue to experiment with different styles, but shouldn't
rush or anything. This album seemed like it was rushed and Jay was probably had alot of pressure. I just hope he doesn't continue with cutesy
songs next time.

Reviewed by 100%J@yChoUfAn## on 18th December 2008 All Jay's songs has its own unique!!!All of them can replesant his favorite n his taste!!!I just cant sttop listening to all his song, its wonderful!!Good work ,Jay!!
Reviewed by meow on 11th December 2008 Absolutely Magical! Once again, Jay has proven his talent and passion in music. Once again, I have been deeply touched by his work and performance. There is no better pleasure than listening to him sing and watching his MTV. Whoever tries taint his name just simply proving no taste, which I'm sure Jay won't care as there'll always be people who can't appreciate art and beauty. Kinda sad actually.
Reviewed by SchumiKimi on 8th December 2008 To those fucking hypocrite Jay fans who previously requested him to include new elements into his music and now criticises him for that, go to hell! This album is absolutely great..one of my top 3 Jay Chou albums. First and second definitely go to November's Chopin and Still Fantasy. Third is Capricorn. Why I love this great piece of work? This is because Jay include lots of new elements into his music which is refreshing especially Dao Xiang, Qiao Ke Shu Shu and Mo Shu Xiang Sheng. I dance right away when listened to the fifth track! Love Jay!
However, Jay very much retains his typical R&B genre such as Gei Wo Yi Shou Ge De Shi Jian, Shuo Hao De Xing Fu Ne and Shi Guang Ji. Long Zhan Qi Shi is damn cool with catchy beats! Jay never disappoint me! Note that Jay has been in music industry for almost a decade now and given such circmstances, he still managed to produce fresh and one of the best music I've ever heard. He never seem exhausted of great ideas. Even the previous 4 heavenly kings (Andy Lau, Aaron Kwok, Jacky Cheung and Leon Lai) can't managed to stay that long...sorry, no disrespect intended
As for Jay, keep on the good work and love you forever! Hope you manage to stay in the industry for another decade. Muakss
* don't get me wrong. I don't worship Jay blindy. I am just speaking my hearts out to those arrogant haters of this album. If you don't like this album, just shut the fuck up and don't listen to it. Listen to his previous songs instead. I personally love this album.
